This week, in the perplexing world of undergraduates*
- A student who emailed to remind me she had a letter of rec due on Friday. She had emailed me the complete version of her writing sample on Thursday. (Yes, I got it done, but only because I had 75% of it done without that piece of writing.)
- The same (high strung) student asking if I have comments for her on said piece of writing.
- Another student working on a final project who emailed at 3:00 today and thinks somehow I'll get this (also long) piece of writing read by class time tomorrow although he cannot make it to my office hours. (Well, I suppose I could stop writing this blog post...)
- A request for an override by a student who neglects to even say whether or not s/he is in the major or cursory information about why my class is appealing. At least they did not address me by my first name.
- A request to CALL a student I don't know in order to discuss a novel she has written. (Seriously. WTF?) That's a first.
* I do not mean to speak in generalization. I like at least 80% of the students I encounter. The last week brings out the worst in everyone, including me.
I just had a student send me a lengthy email (after a whole lot of denied grade grubbing) basically saying that the reason he didn’t do any homework or come to class on time this semester is because I’m not nurturing enough, unlike all the other professors.
ReplyDeleteThat all sounds super annoying. Also, LOL at the post title!
ReplyDeleteUnless you've discovered a magical 30-hour day, how on earth can they expect you to read/do all this? Oy, indeed!
ReplyDeleteNicoleandMaggie--OY!!!
ReplyDeleteAna--Gilmore Girls are always helpful!
Undine--yeah; I mean, I know they're fairly oblivious to what happens outside class, but this is a student headed to grad school in the profession (well, she hopes), sees me in other contexts, and clearly has no idea what my days look like.... not to mention the whole inability-to-plan-doesn't-make-my-emergency thing.
I had a student complain that I was the first to give her a 0 for a highly plagiarized paper and not let her redo- and of course this is an upper level class, plagiarism policy is quite clearly stated in the syllabus...sigh
