Small Victories

There are some big things I could write about:  movement on embryo donation front, thinking about being 'mid-career,' writing projects.  But I figure I have about 3 minutes before I need to haul Tiny Boy out of the tub (I'm sitting on the bathroom floor right now).  So, some small fixes and victories:

  • I have solidified the habit of listening to audio books in the car during my 'commute.'  These proceed glacially slow, as I have all of about 7 minutes between campus or home and kid pick up.  I have figured out that my willingness to listen to an audio book is highly dependent on the voice of the reader, as well as the content of the narrative (I only do nonfiction), so somewhat hit or miss.  I have successfully listened to Malcolm Gladwell, Tina Fey, Carrie Fisher, Barbara Kingsolver, Mary Louise Parker, and Shonda Rhimes (some others, too, but these are what comes to mind).  I confess I gave up on Amy Poehler.
  • Laundry was making me cranky.  Laundry was sitting unfolded in baskets because I hate folding and putting away and the kids don't care.  But no one could find anything, and it was annoying.  So I bought three pretty canvas laundry bags.  I sort them as I get things from the dryer.  I fold and put away my clothes and leave the rest for the kids.  Turns out, LG actually empties her basket right away.  Score!

  1. I gave up on listening to Amy Poehler, too! I thought I really liked her, but I just couldn't put up with her book. This was 2+ years ago so I don't remember what it was that bugged me. (random comment but am oddly "happy" to find someone else who didn't make it through the book)

  2. MJ, I remember thinking Poehler didn't have a lot of content...

  3. Man, I would *love* to have a 7-minute commute! I should start listening to audio books (again) during my commute, which is generally 25-30 minutes each way. NPR is too depressing these days.

And, ugh, laundry! I can't even.

  4. I thoroughly agree with your laundry methods. We did our first "laundry lessons" this weekend---I had my 7 year old help me put the clothes in, add soap, turn the dials etc... And then I showed both boys how to fold shirts & pants & socks and made them do it with me. I know it'll be a long process in getting them independent with it but will be worth it in the end.
I am going to do an Audible trial to get through a book club pick that I am like #500 at the library for---my first audiobook. I've heard its all about the narrator, and some blah books may be OK on audio that suck in print.
