Small Good Things

  1. Today I had coffee with one of our VAPs (visiting assistant professors) who works in my field. Oh, if only we actually had the money to hire him for a real gig. He is smart, energetic, and *nice*, which is not a combination found in any other faculty member in my program.
  2. The public library. Today I picked up a memoir about gluten-free living, Randine Lewis' book on Chinese medicine and ART, Best American Essays 2005 (for a particular essay), and a couple other collections. I came home, made a cup of raspberry tea, and read on the porch. Bliss.
  3. LG was in a decent mood when I picked her up. I'm sure it helped that I took her to get a slushie from the cheapo ice cream joint on the way home.
  4. I'm still liking the granola/yogurt combo. Unfortunately the Lewis book makes it clear that I would be better off not eating dairy. I think once this quart is done I'll need to go back to the oatmeal, at least until I get knocked up. Sigh.
  5. My new shoes. They are Keens in a Mary Jane type style, in blue suede. They weren't what I was looking for, but they meet my needs exactly. And it's nice to have a bit of whimsy in the footwear.

And the best thing of all? I got an email from an old friend, with photos of his and his partner's new baby. They've had a long, complicated journey to arrive here. I wish them a lifetime of joy with her.

  2. Oh, I love a good public library. Ours isn't nearly as fabulous as the one in Grad School Town (where the children's department was an entire floor) and movie rentals were free, but this one certainly meets my basic needs, combined with interlibrary loan.
