So next weekend, immediately after attending commencement, I head back to the fertility clinic. Same but different, as she's moved (I think it must be the building next door) and I, of course, have not been her patient in 3.5 years.
I'm doing a reading, which will be an emotional trip. Probably a mishmash of new and old things representative of "the journey." The part of me that doesn't want to throw up is sort of excited about it, as it's really a perfect audience for a reading. And it might do some patients some good to hear.
I also agreed to do a writing workshop, and I'm not quite sure what that will look like. I've done workshops on "writing the body" before but for a wider female audience, not a group of fertility patients. It's not therapy, although it might be therapeutic. And it might not. I know for me, making art about the experience was really not possible until I had (a small amount of) emotional distance. Most of the work that I do with introductory writing students has to do with imagery and metaphor, and I'm not sure that that's the right way to go here. Need to figure this one out...if you have ideas, let me know! And if you're interested in attending and live in my general neck of the woods, shoot me an email or let me know in the comments.
Sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you could have them write a letter (or other creative piece) *to* their bodies? Allow them to express the anger, disappointment, everything that is taboo ... ?
I like that a lot. Or maybe a letter from whoever they imagine themselves to be 5 years from now...
