Last year winter hit with a hard punch, a snow day for the kids followed by an ice storm, followed by more snow days. I didn't get much of a break myself, between work stuff and kids being home ALL THE TIME.
This year it's not particularly wintery; the snow we've had all melted and it's unseasonably warm. But I am taking an actual break. As in, turned on the autoreply on my work email, not writing, not reading things I'm teaching. Because while there's a lot that "needs" to be done, none of it has an immediate deadline and, really, doing it now doesn't make things a whole lot easier later. There's always more work.
All things considered, I've had a very good year professionally. And I feel like I'm mostly on the other side of the physical/emotional fuckup that was infertility/high risk pg/new motherhood + particularly fucked up tenure process. And right now, I'm just trying to enjoy my kids and really be there for them. So, an honest to goodness break.* We've watched movies and decorated cookies and gingerbread houses and played games and I've cleaned the house and read stuff for "fun." Tomorrow we leave for Disney World (with family, so somewhere between enjoyable and an unmitigated disaster!). I think it's what winter break is supposed to be.
* minus the vomit (Tiny Boy) and eye goo (Tiny Boy and me) and chest cold (me) and headache-that-will-not-die (me) but really better now than during the semester
