Post-tenure. Post-infertility. Post-books. Post-Tiny Boy. Post-I-will-never-sleep-ever-again.
It is 10:15. I've been awake since Tiny Boy came in with me about 5:55. (Had to fetch him milk. Feed cats who decided it was also time to be awake.) I've had breakfast. Finished (finally) the book chapter so student intern can copyedit. I could work on other writing, probably will in a moment, but I only have 45 minutes before I need to leave. And LG is home (windchill is something like -25F, with actual temperature also below zero).
There was a time not too long ago that I'd be panicked, a lot of work to get done and the second day this week I've had kids home (one unplanned), on top of sick day. But life post-? Not so much. One could say I've achieved something resembling "balance," but I'm not sure that's right. Perhaps just perspective. Perhaps just exhaustion.
I say "yes" to things: a new committee assignment, another letter of rec, reviewing for a major journal in my field, family friends coming over for dinner. I say "no" to things: going in to the office to finish something when I'm sick, writing group, probably a work event tomorrow.
Because even if I plowed through everything on my to do list, there would still be more. That's just life.
