Took my first Fragmin injection tonight. I've been on heparin before (3 ttc cycles, plus an entire pregnancy and 6w postpartum) and still poking that needle into my abdomen wigs me out. I always expect it to hurt. In the past when I was on both heparin and aspirin I had some spotting, so I'm waiting to see what happens. I know it's the aspirin, not the heparin, that causes it. Still, I'm a bit anxious, perhaps because my RE isn't certain I need it (she was certainly happy enough to prescribe it, though!). What I know with certainty is this: the only successful pregnancy I've had--from stellar first beta to uneventful full-term birth--involved heparin.* And going without it is not a chance I'm willing to take again.
* I actually have a stupid theory about this. Heparin is known to aid in implantation, and to keep small blood clots from forming in the placenta (in other words, making it work more effectively). The nascent placenta, not the embryo, produces HCG. So, might it not follow that being on heparin might result in higher beta HCG levels in early pregnancy for the same reason it helps ensure the placenta's ability to nurture the embryo later on? If REI were actually my field, I would love to do research on this.
Fingers crossed!!!
