That IVF Thing

So I have a crazy looking diagram from Dr. Gorgeous with my IVF protocol (the generals, anyway).

Without her pretty drawing, it looks something like this: birth control (NuvaRing) for ~10 days starting cd2, add Ganirelix for 5 days, then Microdose Lupron (she wasn't 100% on this) and then beginning stims. When we talked a couple weeks ago, she hadn't said anything about Lupron. Anyone been on a protocol that sounds anything like this? I thought it was Ganirelix OR Lupron, not both?

We'll make the call on whether to transfer 1 (my preference) or 2 based on total embryo number and quality. Stats are something like 45% chance of success (with 30% chance of twins) transferring 2, with about a 35% chance of success transferring 1. To my mind, transferring 1 makes more sense, given that two substantially increases chances of twins without substantially increasing odds of success. But this is putting the cart way before the proverbial horse...

And in what appears to be the boon of the day: if I'm reading the website correctly, it would appear that I have some minimal coverage for injectables (meaning that the copay is $100 for like 4 vials of Menopur) if purchased through my insurance's special order pharmacy. Also seems to indicate I have an out of pocket drug maximum that I will reach within a couple days of doing IVF (does this seriously mean I don't have to pay on top of that?!) Must make an actual phone call to find out.

Of course, Dr. Gorgeous gave me a literal pat on the back and said hopefully we won't need this. The last time she touched me, I ended up pregnant. One can hope :)

  1. Thanks for your comment on my blog.

So you're doing the blood thinners in addition to this, correct? Does that mean even MORE injections? I'm so glad to be done with injections for a little while!!!

The Ganerelix kind of does the same thing as lupron. It supresses ovulation. I've done both, and I prefer the Ganerelix method, because it's less injections. The Microdose lupron, I think, is not enough lupron to supress but is important for some reason - I think it works in the same way as low dose hcg. For me it was like 5 or 10 units on the insulin syringe and was taken at the same time as stims. I think I mixed them, even.

I'm sure I've confused you even more! But good luck.

  3. PJ, yes! I'm on Fragmin (heparin) starting 2dpo through negative beta or for the duration with a positive. I know many women don't start heparin until after a positive test, but I used this protocol when I conceived my daughter so I'm more comfortable with it than waiting. Fragmin's given me needle-phobia; I used to be a lot better about it!
