So did I tell you all I sent my chair a lame email last week, in which I alluded to chronic health issues (true) that have intensified recently (true) and that require at least one medical appointment per week for the forseeable future (true)? I did this mostly so, if need be, I can get out of the zillion-and-one meetings/lectures/departmental events we have in the next few weeks. So this morning, I decided it was in my best interest to go to 2/3 of my yoga class and 3/4 of a committee meeting. Because I didn't really want to miss the whole meeting (too much guilt) but really needed to do something in terms of self-care (grace and calm). It worked out splendidly. But I guess when you almost lie to your department chair about health issues, it only makes sense that you come down with visible health issues; it seems I'm getting a cold. Serves me right for not taking mega-doses of vitamin c anymore. Bottom line: I feel like crap.
Sometimes when I look at my calendar I am struck by just how completely insane the next 29 days will be: 5.5 more job candidates (one visit is half done, we're not interviewing half a person), weekly (or more) TOC meetings, annual merit review (fucking hell), conference travel(umm, when will I write that paper?), a colloquium for the summer program, LG's birthday party, and various and sundry routine bits of academic life (reading, grading, advising, etc). And there's this part of me that thinks must do research, must put manuscripts in the mail but, really, in the whole scheme of things, what's another month? And, really, isn't the most important thing I can do in the next 29 (!) days take care of myself (and, of course, LG)?
Just possibly, next Thursday, when Dr. Gorgeous says in that way of hers so how are you doing?, I might be able to tell her I'm okay.
