- I unpacked my new office (my old building is slated to be demolished). There's a stack of disorganized paper that needs to be filed in actual files (really, I put it in a folder labeled "stuff to file later") and a shelf's worth of books, but mostly it's done.
- Oh, the emails. And more emails. And having pre-meetings before actual meetings. I am sick of it already and the semester is still two weeks out.
- I told a friend I'd read her book chapter before she told me how long it was. Yowza. Lots and lots of words.
- I just registered for the first conference I will attend post-Tiny Boy. And I think I will be taking him with me, as it's in Oct, and he will probably still be nursing. And this means that my mother and LG will probably be tagging along, instead of staying home. And it's in Toronto. Apparently this is the year of Canadian travels.
- This is my last full week with childcare. But thankfully MMH said she'd be able to watch Tiny Boy the first week in Sept, which I hadn't planned on, before he starts daycare. Yahoo!
- My child starts daycare in a month so I should probably start making a habit of pumping. But I hate the pump. I need to buy one of those hands-free pumping bras. Weird.
- Despite the fact that I will not be teaching this fall (yay for tenure! yay for sabbatical!) I feel like it is already January and my semester is over and I have not accomplished anything. Perhaps I can write something tomorrow. Today I was working on a poem called "What Infertility Taught Me" or "An Open Letter to the RE Formerly Known as Dr. Evil." What, you thought I was joking?

Random Bullets of Holy Crap the Semester is Starting

I never thought I'd make it in academics with the chill in the air signaling school bringing me cold sweats. I look forward to more Canadian adventures.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your poetry recital and a sunned copy of your IF poetic tome. Why not? :)
Oh the horrible pump! I hear tell you can just cut some holes in an old bra, maybe a sports bra, but the part I never got was having to take all your clothes off in order to pump. Because don't you have to change bras? Or am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteSO GLAD you don't have to teach!
I wonder if I have a sports bra anymore? Certainly not one that fits nursing boobs.
ReplyDeleteBut I hear you...and I can't really imagine taking off all my clothes at work in order to pump. Ewww. Even if my door does have a lock. Then again, I'll probably be done pumping when I need to go to the office. But still...
Fond memories of my FET in Toronto. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhere in TO will you be staying?
ReplyDelete(I tried to post this yesterday, but I don't think it worked. So I'm sorry if you get this twice!) I never got a hands-free nursing bra, mostly because I didn't want to have to undress at work either. A friend taught be this trick, and it worked great for me: Just take a rubber band (I always used hair ties) and put one end around the shield/cone of the pump. Then loop the other end around the hook on your nursing bra, where the flap connects. (Does that make any sense? It's harder to describe than it is to just do it!) I sometimes had to hold the shields to me at first, but once the suction got going, I could use my hands to hold a book, type, etc. It may not have been quite as secure as the special bra, but it was simple and inexpensive, so it was a perfect solution for me. And most importantly, I didn't have to waste precious pumping time getting undressed. Like I said, I never tried the other bra, so I really can't compare, but you might want to try this trick to see if it will work for you. Good luck! I certainly do NOT miss pumping!
ReplyDeleteYeah! (or rather, Eh!) for more Canadian travel. And Toronto is fun, and close to where I am. You'll have to let me know if you want a tour guide.
ReplyDeleteReally glad to read you don't have to teach this semester. You can get back into the swing of things before having to deal with loads of students and their poorly written essays (there are gems in there too, I know).
Ashley...interesting. I'll have to try that out. Thanks!
