Well, last night sucked. But today has been good.
I'm not sure if it's the Prevacid poop or the immanent emergence of tooth #4 but last night saw the return of the all night suckathon. Really. I could not get him in the crib at all, after he woke inconsolable a mere hour after going to sleep; after that, he wouldn't sleep without my breast in his mouth. I let him CIO when he decided, despite a horrible sleepless night, that 5:30 was a reasonable time to start rolling over me and babbling and smacking the window. After an hour of crying, we both slept for another hour, and LG was late for school (oops!).
I'm giving it until tomorrow and then I am (a) calling his pediatrician to discuss this phenomenon and perhaps getting a referral to a ped GI and (b) putting one or both of us on probiotics (anyone have experience with this?).
But it's a work day, and I have energy, and I've gotten plenty done. 1000 words on the book; plus another chunk on the conference paper; read and took notes for tomorrow's writing session; come up with a list of places to submit things that have been languishing on the computer for far too long; taken a walk; pumped twice; started a load of laundry and put away the previous two.
Things not accomplished: renewing library books (stupid electronic system kept freezing up), bill paying (tonight!), washing breast pads (I use the utterly expensive and comfy wool variety). I also collected some leaves that I'd like to paint, as I have not managed to practice for my painting class, so perhaps that will happen tomorrow.
Now I've got to cook something quickly and pick up kids. I'm starting to crash...

We are both on dairy-free probiotics. Honestly it sounds like teething related discomfort causing the sleep disturbances. Our pedi agreed especially since the sleep issues intensified around tooth eruption. Could also be related to developmental milestones. Reflux related discomfort probably would manifest as consistent painful wakings and/or pain w/ feeding.
ReplyDeleteMaybe try a new pediatrician before GI specialist?
Just my ideas of course. We've seen 3 pediatricians and 2/3 said the frequent wakings (2-3 hr first stretch then every hour some nights) sounded teeth related given lack of other reflux symptoms. We started her on zantac after seeing the 3rd pediatrician and it was apparent the poop problems were causing more issues than they were resolving. Since then we went back to the 1st pediatrician and give double doses of motrin prn maybe once a week or when we see she's been chewing on her fingers or more fussy during the day.
I didn't accomplish half that much today, and I had a full night of sleep!
ReplyDeleteHopefully you won't have to do it again tomorrow (work while sleep deprived, that is.)
Jodi, the teeth very well might account for nights like the last one. But the general pattern has been this way off and on since birth... and he definitely has reflux. Manifested early on as milk-out-the-nose and choking and, more recently, as spitting up, cough, and lots of hiccups. Not sure if that's IT or just one component.
ReplyDeleteYep, dd had the milk out the nose fits, extremely fussy, hiccups several times a day, burping then swallowing, spitting up regularly till 8 mo or so, she's always been constantly in motion (no exaggeration... she's always moving to the point that I convinced myself the reflux was causing her to be so uncomfortable she was moving to get away from the pain). We followed the "she'll grow out of it... all babies spit up" jive until she started arching her back sometimes after nursing at night so we started zantac w/ 3rd pediatrician. I so so soooo wanted it to help her sleep, but no dice. Anyways, she's had far less reflux symptoms lately for whatever reason. Maybe my diet or maybe she just outgrew it?
DeleteWe've had her on this since 4 weeks or so-

It's a powder that I either put in her food if she'll eat real food or in water and she drinks it w no problem.
And we take Solaray Multidophilus plus (capsules), but we've used several different ones, kyodophilus 9 capsules were less expensive and didn't need refrigeration.
Oh, what dose probiotic do you use? One capsule?
ReplyDeleteShe takes 1/2 tsp once a day. We take 1 capsule. I've heard three lac is also a good brand (if I remember right anyway). Oh, and I've always enjoyed your blog because of how similar tb is to my dd. So many blogs are about great sleepers that are such a joy and poop rainbows. I think I found you through another IF blog before I got pregnant the last time (6 prior mc's). Anyway.
DeleteWe used biogaia a flavorless liquid that wad to be refrigerated and wa pricey, when my son had a salmonella infection as a 6 month old (while he was being exclusively breastfed, probably linked to him handling dog food or contaminated dog toys (yay!). They worked well.
