Problem Solving for the Sleep Starved Mama

All kidding aside, I do think we've reached (I've reached) a crisis-level of sleep starvation.  Like, I'm aware that I'm doing everything in slow motion.  Even typing is challenging.  I probably shouldn't be driving a car at all.  So:

1. Tiny Boy's pediatrician called me back personally last night and called in a prescription for Prevacid (instead of Zantac).  We talked about melatonin, and she's reluctant to use it on such a small guy.  But she said if the Prevacid doesn't work we can talk about other things.

2. My mother is going to stay with us for "a few days."  I do think I want to check into a hotel, but I don't think I will if her solution is to let Tiny Boy CIO all night.  I say this because I think right now the goal needs to be doing whatever needs to be done to get us both more sleep, and the training can come a bit later.  He's also actively teething, might be getting a cold, and had a flu shot this morning.  So we'll talk.

3. I am still waiting to hear back from my ob/gyn's office about me taking ambien (and them prescribing me ambien).  While I don't really like it, I do fall asleep and stay asleep for about 6-7 hrs straight.  Which is less than ideal but so much better than I've slept in the past 10.5 months that it won't really matter.

4. I was planning on taking Tiny Boy (and LG and my mom) with me to a conference in a couple weeks.  Now I am thinking that if I can get a large enough milk stash (how much would he need, over about 4 days? 100-120 ounces?) I'll leave them behind.  Because that's 3 nights in a swanky hotel and I might just be able to relax (and self-medicate with valium or something if I can't).

Thank you for all your support.  It does mean a lot in those wee hours.

  1. I feel like there is hope in here. And I think the conference idea is splendid. I know that TB is exclusively breastfed, but I know that my willpower to stick to that in light of the conference would be shaken. Stash be damned!

Is there anyone left to consult? There has to be something to get over the first few nights for your guy. He's just not getting the joy of full sleep.

The cold with E has brought us back to less than 6 hours at night without any further long stretches. I have resorted to just staying with her in bed for naps today in the hope that she'll manage at least ten total hours for today. Yesterday was about eight and the end of that day was not pretty.

  2. I did the conference thing by myself when DC1 was that old. It was glorious. I had trouble sleeping the first night, but night two was amazing.

  3. I hope your Mom can agree to something that will allow you to check into that hotel, because yeah, starvation...bad stuff. And I can only imagine how strongly you must feel about exclusively breastfeeding given how much you're putting into it, but I too was like CONFERENCE! HOTEL! FORMULA!

I'm so hoping you and your ped can come up with a fix. I can only imagine how hard it must feel to not know whether there is Something Wrong. I mean, clearly there's something wrong--neither of you is sleeping, but is this a "and then we figured out it was X all along and I was so vindicated!" situation? I hope so. I hope you find X!

  4. It didn't really occur to me that he might have supplementary formula at this late date. I think I'd be too worried that he just wouldn't drink it and would starve his little 16 lb self (given that he's never had it) that I wouldn't be able to relax or enjoy the conference or any of that stuff.

I do recognize the use value in formula...LG HAD to have it or I think we both would have starved and I'm only being slightly hyperbolic. But huh...trying it out for an 11 month old? Perhaps something to think about.

  5. Oh woman! You need some serious sleep (just thought I'd state the obvious and have you pissed at me instead of your kid - you know, women do these things for each other). Hey, I hope a sleep study is in the cards, or some other means of diagnosing what the hell is going on with that sweet baby boy. Keep your courage.

  6. I haven't been replying, but I'm here reading. Thinking of you during this awful sleep deprivation.
