Sleep Starved

Thanks, Misfit, for that term.  I am indeed sleep starved.

Unfortunately I'm not doing better today.  Actually I pretty much cracked after another night of waking every 40-80 minutes (he wakes with EVERY sleep cycle, so it really doesn't matter if he can put himself to sleep or not--I mean, he CAN and sometimes does--he's still waking me.  And, yeah, I can hear him if I'm on the couch downstairs.

I was hoping I had some leftover pre-transfer ambien in my drug stash, but apparently I got rid of that along with the extra lovenox.

So tomorrow I'll call his pediatrician and see if we can get a referral to a sleep specialist.  If we can't, I might need to get a new ped.  And if I have another night like the last few, well, my mama has graciously volunteered to come up and stay with us for a few nights.  And I'll be checking into a hotel.

  1. So sorry you're not getting any sleep. I hope you get the answers you need to help Tiny Boy and yourself sleep better.

  3. Hi there, came here from Sprogblogger.
I am so sorry for your ordeal. I have been there with my first son. Waking up every 40 min. Went to a sleep specialist, did diddly squat for us. They gave us all the silly advice you find in sleep training books. Which are stupid. Both the books and the advice.
I couldn't say we did something that worked. We coslept, and that helped me get a bit more sleep myself. But there was nothing I could do. He had to learn by himself. He started sleeping in his cot by 14 months and then he started waking up "only" 2-3 times by 16 months. Now he is 25 mo and wakes up once or sleeps through the night (but rarely). Nothing I did help, I had to wait until it got better. Know that it WILL get better. But sadly, you can't do much until then. We were given something as baby sleeping drops, spectacularly ineffective.
Of course, I have no job that needs my attention, so I had it better from this point of view. I am sure, should I have had a job, either I would have gotten fired, or I would have quit.
Oh, and somthing else - no one believes the extent of your sleep deprivation, or starvation, unless they have been there. But everyone has an opinion and know they would do better than you.
One last thing - try a chiropractor. You need someone who specialises in babies. Mny children have things sorted out by this. Maybe yours is one of them.
Excuse the typos. Too lazy to correct them.
    Good luck.

  4. I know someone who used earplugs-she was a very very light sleeper, so didn't sleep even when her baby did. I think she set an alarm for every few hours so she could look at the video monitor and make sure everything was okay.

  5. Thank you so much, Mina. It helps, honestly, just knowing that another mother has dealt with similar stuff and gotten to the other side of it.

I'm grateful that I don't need to be *at* work right now, but I do need to be working and yes it feels impossible sometimes my brain is so sluggish. Left to my own devices I can sleep easily 9 hours....right now I'm lucky I think if I'm getting 4, and even that is quite fragmented.

  6. ej, yes, I wish I could wear ear plugs....they make me crazy!

  7. Me, too! I can never sleep with ear plugs in because I'm always worried about what I'm *not* hearing. Maybe a sound machine by the couch with just enough white noise to drown out everything but serious crying?

I have a hard enough time reading and writing after a decent night's sleep. I can't imagine doing it when sleep starved. For what its worth, you have my sympathies!

  8. Oh, no! I wish I had something brilliant to say. But I don't. You are something remarkable, indeed, to be surviving all this. I hope things improve, immediately.

  9. I hope you're serious about the hotel because you need to go! Make sure to go for at least two nights because I think when you're sleep deprived (at least in my experience) the first good night doesn't cut into the dent much.

I'm so sorry that nothing is working. I know if I was doing this parenting thing as a single mom I'd figure it out, but I really do admire you. I rely heavily on taking turns to get through the bad stuff. You are doing an amazing job with your son.
