Oh, goody, more drugs in my arsenal

Can you hear the sarcasm?

Apparently I have the MTHFR mutation. Now I get to take Folgard, on top of everything else.

But hey, if it means I get a baby out of the deal, I'm not knocking it.

This is pretty new to me, so if you know anything about MTHFR send it my way...

    This gives a good overview.

When I was doing research after Alex was born, this came up (although tests showed that I do not have it). I remember reading that pregnant women with MTHFR could benefit from a lot (I mean A LOT) of extra folic acid and by using lovenox or heparin injections. Have you been referred to a geneticist to discuss the issue and what would be best for you during your next pregnancy?

Good luck! I really hope that treatment allows you a positive pregnancy outcome.

  2. Thanks, Michele. Folgard is prescription folic acid, plus other B vitamins; my RE doesn't feel I'm at risk of clotting, but she has me on heparin (Fragmin) anyway, so all my bases are covered.

  3. HI,

There's quite a lot of MTHFR treatment info out there on the web. There are some links on my blog.

Glad you found an answer, at least. If you have heparin and folgard you should be covered.

Which mutation do you have? I have a single C677T.

  4. Hi, Andie. I'm heterozygous, but I forgot to ask which form. Would you mind sending me the link to your blog? You can email me at gwinne (at) yahoo.com if you'd prefer. Thanks for all your advice!

  5. Hey there. :) Thanks for your comment, and I'm taking some time to poke around your blog.

Not sure if it was in the link that you found me through, but I'm positive for MTHFR, compound hetero (it means I have one faulty copy of each of the two genes). I'm on the folgard, and though my RE thought that baby aspirin would be enough for pregnancy, I'm paranoid like that, and he agreed to put me on the lovenox.

I've done tons of research in the last few weeks since getting my diagnosis, so if you want to chat, feel free to drop me a line at twohotmamas at gmail.
