A Diamond Ring

Can I just say I love it when doctors speak metaphor?

The good:  heartbeat, appropriate rate for gestational age.  The scary: sac measuring only 5w6d.

Unlike me, the good doctor is not worried.  I asked her point blank if she thought the funky betas meant anything about this embryo and she said no.  She really thinks The Twin Who Wreaked All Kinds of Havoc just masked what this embryo was doing all along.

I've got another u/s scheduled for next Tuesday and then, gulp, she wants me to see an OB the week after that.  I tag-teamed my first RE and OB until I finally got kicked out at 10 weeks, so this is pretty fucking scary.

I still don't really believe that this will result in a Take Home Baby.  But I'd be thrilled to be proved wrong.

  2. But you're 6w2d, no? Everywhere I've gotten scanned has made sure that I'm WELL aware of a 3-4 day margin of error, especially that early, where 1/2mm can mean a day or so. I'm glad the doctor is not worried, and hope that you can get to a less worried place soon. :)

  4. Yes! YES YES YES YES YESSSSS!!!!! My doc always said not to worry about measurements, because even a teensy variation in the angle of the peanut relative to the machinery can alter the measurement by a little bit. Here's to a healthy & not-too-freaked-out 8 more months or so!

    Yay!

  5. I would have to agree with the other commenter above. I've had my doctors measure and re-measure until they got the dates right (like baby only measured 7 weeks but should have been 8 so they just keep redoing it unitl they "made" it measure 8). I would think that this early in the game there are all sorts of margins of error.
    You'll get there!

  7. After I thought about it and also realized that's just 3 days. . . and then after reading above comments, PLUS what doc said, sounds like it's not too unusual. And heartbeat. Yay!

  8. At my first ultrasound with this pregnancy, the baby measured 2 days behind. He's measured at least a week ahead every scan since then! The most important thing is that you saw a heartbeat already! That's FABULOUS! YAY!

  9. Yipppppeeeee! Heartbeat!!! That is AWESOME! And you are a petite lady, so it makes sense that you would have a slightly petite peanut, no? Especially if it was sharing digs with a twin? So excited for you!
    Love,
    Maddy

  10. Thanks, y'all. The sac has been measuring behind for the past week, so I think it's just small. Maybe I got lucky with LG, but early ultrasounds were spot on accurate, even on crappy equipment in 2003. It wasn't until after 12 weeks that she developed her own "growth curve."

I wouldn't be worried except nothing in this pregnancy has been normal, so I have to worry about it...

Rebecca, what are you drinking? I could really use a big glass of red wine :)

  11. Quick question Gwinne - "diamond ring"? Assuming that was in reference to size of peanut?

  12. Shape, actually. It's the embryo sitting on top of its yolk sac.
