Back in the Trenches

All I can say is holy crap.

Ahem.

So last night I dutifully made a check list of all the stuff that the three of us needed to get out of the house on time, which, for the record, is not any earlier than we theoretically left last semester, only it needed to be ACTUALLY on time, and I needed to be in actual clothes, with my hair and teeth brushed; this list included lunch and a backpack for LG; diapers, lunch, bottles, blanket/sheet for Tiny Boy; water bottle, backpack, breast pump [and all the stuff that goes with it], lunch box, and a bag of snacks and stuff to leave there for me.

And we were on time.  We left the house at 8:20 and by 9:02 I was sitting down at my desk preparing for the day.  I tried leaving early for my first class, and ended up a minute late, as I was completely unable to find the room (but ran into about 6 students in the same predicament) as it was labeled "south" but in the "north" wing of the building (who the fuck came up with that?!).

Then I was back in my office at 12:20 and desperately needed to pump and couldn't get my lunch (because our fridge is in the conference room and there was a meeting running late--lesson learned, don't bother using the fridge but bring an ice pack) and the secretary told me that my 1:00 meeting needed to be moved to 1:30 which was fine as I hadn't eaten, or pumped, or gotten my shit together.

For once I had a decent meeting with my department chair, which included me volunteering to take on additional responsibilities, even as he's saying do you really want to do this? and then I emailed half a dozen people to set up half a dozen meetings in the next week (all the stuff on my to do list that basically went "save until early Jan") and medicated something threatening to become a migraine and realized I was going to be late for class #2 at 3:00 if I didn't pack up my stuff.

And at about 3:30 I glanced down at my phone to see what time it was, only to note I had not one but two messages on my phone.  And, now that I am no longer a fertility patient, that basically means only A. or my kids' respective schools would call.

This is the part where I say I got a call about a sick kid on my FIRST DAY IN THE CLASSROOM SINCE AUGUST 2011.  Dismiss class early, prepare to clean up a lot of puke.

So far, knock wood, there has not been a repeat, and he has had water, breastmilk, and bread to eat.  Please, please, please let me be able to go to work on Wednesday.

  1. Oh man. :(

Sorry about the sick kid. I had one home with me today as well. Le sigh.

  2. My boys started day care last week. I have been 20 minutes early to work every day (wondering how to change that so they are not at daycare longer than they need to be but can seem to consciously leave the house later than 7 AM), AND their first day was cut short as The Dynamo spiked a fever. Good times.

  3. Yeah...I'm sort of wondering how it is I will actually be able to do my job.

FWIW, I found that the first daycare year with LG was the worst in terms of illness (she was also 2 that year) and then things got MUCH better.

  5. crazy day. I find the logistics of single parenting one kid sometimes overwhelming. Just physically carrying all the crap plus child out the door can be a challenge for my patience. You are amazing. GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!

  6. Good lord. My divan is feeling mighty silky right now. I'm hoping this was just a shitty start and that all will be totally smooth from now on!
