A Post While Tiny Boy Plays with a Guitar

So NaBloPoMo didn't happen yesterday, which was one of those days that went from one thing to the next all freaking day long (not quite to the extent of Justine's recent post but still).

And today I skipped yoga in order to take Tiny Boy to the doctor--he's had a virus and his breathing sounded horrid--and left him at daycare crying because I had a meeting, followed by a talk, followed by what was supposed to be a meeting with my thesis advisees (who bailed, due to illness, so I ended up commenting on their work, long overdue), and then I cancelled an appointment to pick up my new car (yes, I'm in the process of buying a new car, which is the same as my old car, only 13 years newer) because I didn't have time to clean the old one and get the car seat out, much less have an hour of signing papers and all the stuff that goes along with car purchasing.  That brings us to about 4:15 when I picked up Tiny Boy early and then went to Walgreens to pick up more albuterol and a new prescription for Singulair.  And now he's strumming on a guitar--miraculous recovery--and LG is doing her own thing, and I have chili going, and I'm not going to think about the fact that somehow I need to grade a stack of 5 page papers and the usual shorter things and read a novel I've never read before and figure out what I'm going to read at my off campus event thing on Monday and finish edits for my next book and... yeah, it's just a bit much.

But I'm also at the point in my career/life that I don't sacrifice sleep for doing more stuff.  And I'll probably watch the latest episode of Parenthood, if my kids ever decide to go to sleep tonight.

  1. Props to you for putting sleep first!

I always talk with students about doing one thing at a time, and honestly, I ought to take my own advice more often.

I also don't know how you can fit everything in that you do during the day. I find you nearly superhuman. So there's that. ;)

    You are a wise woman.
I keep falling into this trap, even though I know skipping sleep just makes everything so much worse...

  3. Ha! I'm hardly superhuman. And if I were pretenure (and/or not doing admin work), I think things would look very different.

As for sleep: serious sleep deprivation is still so close in my recent past that I just CAN'T not prioritize it. Under 6 hrs sleep in one night, or multiple nights of under 7 and I'm pretty much useless.

But I think about Laura Vanderkam's argument for working 50ish hrs per week and I wonder WHY if you don't need to. I haven't done real time tracking in a while, but I'd guess my hrs don't go over 40 (including whatever work I might do on nights and weekends). And it's not like working more would translate for me into more $$ or much else. Maybe a faster time to publication, but what's the rush.

I should stop commenting and use this for a daily post...
