I was going to write a post last night about what an absolutely perfect day we had, but then I spent about three hours in a constant nursing/rocking pattern and fell asleep as soon as the boy finally did.
Anyway, yesterday I decided to (a) keep a record of when Tiny Boy actually eats and sleeps, as he seems to be on the cusp of developing a schedule and (b) swaddle him for all naps. The result? It appears that the kid falls asleep almost exactly two hours after waking, and the swaddle created three actual naps, not just quickie, sleep-in-mom's-arms moments. He napped from 8:45-10:50, 12:45-1:30, and 3:30-5:15 (and he might have kept going, but I woke him as to not screw up bedtime. oops). So while I would have preferred a longer early afternoon nap and a shorter late afternoon one, damn, naps are nice.
The result of all this regular sleepage: I did some real writing and reading as well as domestic work and really enjoyed his awake moments. We took a walk, we hung out with BPF, we played. Tiny Boy could not be more different from LG in such regards. Now some of LG's difficulties were medical (she had chronic diarrhea/reflux for many months), but having raised her for almost eight years, I can now say with certainty some of it (a lot?) was personality. She's just intense and has a really difficult time calming down. But Tiny Boy? It seems that if his immediate needs are met, he's generally a happy guy.
We need to work on the 4:00 am fussiness. And perhaps an actual bedtime, because that clearly didn't work yesterday, and if I don't have a little bit of time in which to eat/drink, the whole nonstop nursing doesn't go very well, but still, yesterday? Pretty great. Especially the parts where I got to spend some time after school with LG because her brother was asleep, and she didn't run off to read Nancy Drew.
Anyway, I'm hoping today looks somewhat similar, though we're actually heading to campus. Books to return, mail to pick up... I'll let you know how it goes.
I swaddled the twins until they were big enough to break free. They slept so much better being swaddled but I did it right from birth. Fingers crossed for getting Tiny Boy on a schedule! (and for Blogger letting me comment.)
ReplyDeleteI've been swaddling him off and on, mostly at night. He's always been able to break free...even now in the Swaddle Me blanket he can sometimes work his hands out the top. But, yeah, a schedule would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI swaddled my boys so tightly, visitors sometimes gave me a funny look! But it worked! :)
