Here's how this goes:
1. I ask for a referral for Tiny Boy for a sleep study. With a specific doctor. For a specific reason.
2. The nurse who does referrals tells me I need to make an app't with his ped.
3. I say that's a waste of our time, but if that's the only way to do it, fine.
4. The nurse and I continue our conversation. She asks predictable questions. I give answers about the problem and the effects of the problem. I very specifically say I need to find out if there is a BIOLOGICAL rather than BEHAVIORAL reason for Tiny Boy's sleep. She says she'll call back either with a referral, or to tell me that I need to make an appt.
5. A week passes. I don't hear anything. I call back. Different nurse apologizes but says they've sent over a referral to the BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY unit, because they are the only place in the area that does sleep studies on little kids.
6. I call the sleep clinic. They say they can't help me, do some hunting around, say they can't help me because his referral has gone to a different department.
7. I call the behavioral psych department which, predictably, says WE DON'T DO SLEEP STUDIES. I say tell me what I'm supposed to do here, because you DO have a doctor who works in the sleep clinic. She says, well, you need to talk to this woman named Amy in the sleep clinic. Be very specific with her.
8. I'm transferred over to Amy who looks at the referral and says so you're saying his problem is mostly SLEEP. No, his problem is EXCLUSIVELY sleep but sure that has some behavioral effects. My goal is to get him a sleep study, if we need to do that through behavioral psych that's fine, but they referred me to you.
9. Amy, bless her heart, volunteers to call Tiny Boy's pedatrician herself. Makes a note in his chart that he needs to be seen at the multi-unit sleep clinic because, well, of course they have a pediatric unit...they do sleep studies on INFANTS every night.
10. She calls me back, says the referral coordinator is out for the day, but she'll keep working with them. What needs to happen is the referral needs to be sent to her department and the pediatrician needs to rescind the thing about behavior. But, well, you know he has been seen in urology and if we need to we can get a specialist to refer to another specialist, though I doubt a urologist would be comfortable referring for sleep...
