Perimenopause (A 5-min Post)

At my annual ladyparts visit circa March 2014, she gave me a script for prometrium because my always short cycles were tipping into radically too short territory (like 19 days) or I was bleeding for weeks on end.  That sort of thing.

More recently I've had cycles I know I don't ovulate...and then finally get to about 30 days with no period and then take my prometrium and, voila, two weeks later I bleed.

I was explaining all this at my ladyparts visit last week.  And then she said, "well we need to run menopause hormones on you" and I was like "you mean day 3 bloodtest?" and we went back and forth for a bit because, well, when you spend like 4+ years at fertility clinics you know a thing or two about hormone levels.

Somewhere in there I said, you know this isn't surprising, I used an egg donor to have my son.  (She'd forgotten this.)  She said something about AMH.  I said yeah that was tested in like 2010; it was low.  Bad, she said.  I said, well, no one ever used that word.

I don't know why this bothers me.  It's not news.  I remember reading something about how your AFC roughly tells you years to go until menopause (which, indeed, would be in the next couple years for me).  I used an egg donor.  But. With all these miracle sex pregnancy babies happening on the internet... I don't know.  Bad ideas.  Not even fully formed ideas.  Let's leave it at that.

Now I need to put on actual clothes and go to work.

  1. Interesting. I had sort of the same convo with my obgyn and I asked about running hormones bc you know, that's what we do. But she said no need. I kind of want to know "how bad" things are but she acted like this is happening, we don't need blood tests to prove it. I've been having the short cycle/weeks of light bleeding too with some normal months interspersed in there. My AMH and AFC were good the last time checked but that was 2009. If AFC were the guide I'd have many more years until the big M but I don't think that will be true...

  2. She explained the need to run the bloodwork this way: if I'm NOT close to menopause based of FSH, etc, then these crazylong cycles are a uterine cancer risk (unchecked high estrogen)...what's dumb about it is that I'm already on prometrium so I'm already being treated? If I am on the fasttrack to menopause, eventaully my body will stop responding to prometrium and bye bye period. Information gathering I guess. Didn't make a whole lot of sense, but I got to show off
