Well that was a big waste of time.
After ruling out an ear infection, the pediatrician suggested that I
I will say that after his first 20 minute waking tonight I did let him fuss in the crib and he was back to sleep in about 15 minutes and has not woken up for the past hour. So that's progress.
I was also informed that my 7 month old might have ADHD. Or, more precisely, that kids who sleep like Tiny Boy often have "excess energy" that manifests as ADHD when they grow up. Just dandy, ain't it?
As both A and M think, this particular ped is a loon (and not just about this). So we'll see what happens before his 9 mo well visit and confer with our usual doc.
But my little peanut got a free weight check... 15 lbs 13 oz. Almost time to move into 6-9 month clothes!
After ruling out an ear infection, the pediatrician suggested that I
- give Tiny Boy cereal at dinner
- put him back on Zantac
- consider Tylenol at bedtime in case he has teething pain
- stop nursing him to sleep
- Ferberize him

Ugh, what a loon. We had a temporary pedi when our first one was on maternity leave who told me I had to force DS's foreskin. Which, of course, is one of the leading causes of complications for uncirc babies. When it's time to play with the foreskin the boy will play with it himself (a lot, it turns out).
ReplyDeleteMy mom just told me that she was (mis)diagnosed with ADHD as a toddler, but then my grandma took her to another pedi who said that was ridiculous and diagnosed her instead with extreme boredom and recommended preschool. Preschool seemed to do the trick.
For what it's worth, the pediatric sleep doctor I worked with felt strongly that before any child was diagnosed with ADHD that they first undergo a sleep study to rule out a sleep disorder. Some kids with sleep disorders are misdiagnosed with ADHD.
ReplyDeleteThat pedi DOES sound like a loon. Yuck. I hope the tummy meds help. When Hen was on antibiotics for 3 weeks, he didn't sleep well the whole time, and I KNOW it was from an unhappy tummy. Hoping this solves it for him/you!
ReplyDeleteI'm still catching up on the back story, so I won't offer any unsolicited, doubtless aggravating advice, but I have to say the idea of a ped telling you your child is likely to be diagnosed with ADHD...makes me the psychologist in me want to KILL KILL KILL. And the mother in me...well, what's stronger than killing? Um, torture and then kill?
ReplyDeleteGot some rage there, bunny?
ReplyDeleteBut, yeah, I was appalled. He's an INFANT for crying out loud!

ReplyDeleteThis is such bullshit. Aside from the fact that Tiny Boy is, you know, 7 months old, even if he does have "excess energy", like my middle son does, that's nothing a good daycare program with a lot of stimulation and physical activity can't take care of.
I have read somewhere that kids of above-average intelligence tend to need little sleep because they need less time than their average peers to process new information; also they tend to be curious, i.e. why sleep when there is more fun stuff to do!
Ped seems like a drug-happy loon.
Your description of Tiny Boy's sleep habits mirrors my dd's. She is also nearly 7 months old and there are days I can't formulate a sentence, or have difficulty using my fine motor skills to put lids on Tupperware. There's a reason why the UN considers sleep deprivation a form of torture! I hope the Zantac helps. We tried the no cry sleep solution, we've had some small gains. We now let her fuss but not CIO and to a max of 5 minutes and have seen great results at night for longer than her usual 40 minute intervals of sleep. She doesn't nap much, and seems to bore easily- so I am trying to do unique activities more often for her during the day which seems to help her have better night sleeping. We also got her a fisher price zoo activity center for the crib. She has only been doing the crib for a month or so now and this was the quietest one I could find. She really likes it and it buys us extra time in the mornings; she seems to ignore it at night which is okay. Good luck!
