Out of curiosity, I asked LG yesterday what she thought of Father's Day. Her response? I don't think about it because I don't have a dad.
Stupid me, I couldn't let that go. I mean, if you wanted that could be a day that you acknowledge the donor.
What donor? What are you talking about?
You know...the man who donated the sperm so I could have you. (For the record, I've used the word "donor" consistently since she was about 3 and talking about the fake dad who lived in our basement. Some kids have imaginary friends, LG had an imaginary dad who was a pilot who lived in Africa with a half-sibling until he decided to shack up in our basement, and then I had to give him a pretend lunch on the weekends. Yeah, that was a fun conversation with her preschool teacher.)
Oh, donor like DONATE.
Yeah. What do you think about that?
I don't really think about him.
Me either, except without him I wouldn't have you.
Or Tiny Boy.
Or Tiny Boy, so I'm very grateful to him.
Me too. I wouldn't be me without him! Did you use the same donor to have Tiny Boy?
No, I didn't.

And that was the end of that; kid goes back to reading her book. Clearly my daughter is, at age 8, anything but traumatized from her conception story. I'll call that a win.

A win for sure!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely a win! Hoping that Hen ends up just as happily adjusted to the story of his beginnings!
ReplyDeleteOf course, it's entirely possible it will wind up being an issue someday, but so far, not really.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteMy OB has children via ADI as well, and she says her kids are the exact same way. Donor? What donor?
She is a laugh. Good stuff!
