Okay. So a while ago MeandBaby nominated me for an "Honest Scraps" award (which I very much appreciate!). I think of everything posted here as an honest scrap, of sorts, so I'm doing this mostly as a 10 things you probably don't know about me but might like to. The "rules" of the award specify that you need to nominate at least 7 others for the award but, really, that's not my style. So, dear readers, please nominate yourselves for the award and carry on the tradition (but, FWIW, I'd very much like to see what Profgrrrrl, Dr. Crazy, and Claudia would do for such a thing, if you are reading).
Anyway, here are my scraps:
1. I am a TV junkie. I don't tend to watch a lot of shows, but I do have one or two that I follow obsessively for a period of time. This started with Little House on the Prairie when I was 10. The next major obsession was The X-Files (yes, major time gap here) followed by Gilmore Girls. Currently watching House and Bones and occasionally reruns of Judging Amy on TNT.com. I watched the first three seasons of Weeds on DVD in about a two week span. Addictive :)
2. I keep chocolate hidden from LG and eat it after she goes to bed. Other than that, I try to buy snacks that she likes that I don't, so I don't eat them. I get really hungry under the influence of progesterone. When I was first ttc, I called it the Summer of Fried Chicken.
3. My mother thought I was anorexic in high school. I was skinny and read a lot of books about anorexia and biographies of dancers. There's still something incredibly provocative to me about weighing less than 100 lbs, although it was admittedly scary to weigh 93 lbs as a nursing mother (apparently my body goes into hyper-metabolism or something).
4. I haven't had sex since before LG was born. Actually I haven't had sex since before I was pregnant with LG. Most of the time I'm not bothered by that fact. I assume it isn't a permanent state of being.
5. I think my absolute favorite food is chicken tikka masala from a local Indian restaurant. I only eat it a few times per year, with friends.
6. I always assumed I would never be one of those mothers who gets so busy she forgets to shower. Turns out that I am. (Or, more accurately, decides it's not worth the energy as long as my vital parts are clean and I smell okay.)
7. LG actually told a joke tonight that made sense. It was a knock-knock joke that went "who's there?" "Ivan." "Ivan who?" "I've been working on the railroad." I suppose that's not really about me, so I'll add an extra.
8. The worst parenting moment I've ever had was when LG was around 2.5. I smashed a bottle in her room, after several hours of her refusing to sleep and calling me with various requests (it went something like "I want more rice milk, no that's not the right amount of rice milk, I want water, I don't want water, I want rice milk, I want..." I locked myself in the car for a while, as it was the only place in the house I couldn't hear her calling me. I'm not proud of it. I worry that when she's in therapy as an adult she'll be hypnotized and that will come out.
9. The part about mothering that makes me the most crazy? The noise. The constant chatter and noise.
10. I'm fairly certain that I have some form of Sensory Integration Disorder (see #9), though I have never been tested. Same with LG. I'm careful about our routines or there are "kwonsequences," as LG says.
11. I'm taking entirely too many pills. For a long time, I wouldn't even take Tylenol for cramps. As a rule, I avoid foods with artificial colors, presevatives, etc. I don't drink (other than an occasional glass of wine--like once a month) and I'm off caffeine. And yet, on a typical day right now, I am taking a prenatal vitamin, vitamin B12, folic acid, baby aspirin, misc. fertility drugs and hormone supplements and something to deal with The Headache caused by the above (Tylenol, anaprox, fioricet and/or Amerge, depending on the severity of the situation). This can't be good for my liver.
12. I don't know if I've ever really made this clear on the blog. But I'm a Single Mother by Choice by choice. It's my Plan A. My first choice. And I hope one day that makes my kid feel really special.
p.s. I have now taken my first two [or four, depending on how you look at it] doses of Femara and my ovaries feel like popcorn. Here's hoping there's 2 follicles in there (but no more than that, please!).
Thanks for sharing! One of my fears if I ever make it to SMC is your #9. I treasure the quiet.
ReplyDeleteWishing you much luck this cycle!!
Ooh! LG is at perfect joke age!
ReplyDeleteTwo faves of mine, one from when I was around her age, and one from my little cousin (more like a niece than a cousin, really) who loves a joke.
First mine:
Wanna hear a dirty joke?
The pig fell in the mud.
Wanna hear a clean joke?
He took a shower.
(I could not get enough of this joke from the ages of about 4 through 7. Tragically, even then I could not tell a joke, and so I would just say "The pig fell in the mud. He took a shower!" and laugh uproariously. I should note that I had to think really hard just now not to write it out that way, because I still think it's funny without the questions and that is how it's cemented in my memory.
Now, for my cousin Mary's joke:
Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Because 7 ate 9!
I'll try to get to some honest scraps by the week's end. In theory right now I'm supposed to be grading (sigh).
Oh, Dr C, I totally needed those jokes at dinner tonight! She will love that pig one. (Most of her jokes involve farm animals or old ladies or both.) Looking forward to your scraps, whenever you get to them :)
ReplyDeleteMeAndBaby: you'll find ways to deal with the noise. LG can be silenced with the TV or a coloring book. And sometimes I say "let's play a game. Let's see who can be quiet until the timer goes off!" LG has been talking since 8 months and she really hasn't shut up since :)
