Can't We Catch a Break?

(weird phrase, that...must look up etymology of it)

Anyhoo.  Usual disclaimer:  In the BIG scheme of my life, things are good.  I know this.

But.

Can't we just catch a break in the stupid life crap department?  So my basement flooded a couple weeks ago.  And I've had one kid or another at urgent care or the doctor's office every week for I can't remember how long.  Tiny Boy was there on Mother's Day, which seems just about right.  LG was diagnosed with a lymph node infection--her neck is HUGE--this past weekend.  Then Tiny Boy develops a fever WHILE ON ANTIBIOTICS.  So last night, after I put fever boy to bed and dealt with LG being NINE and full of DRAMA and crawled into bed (without ambien, thank you very much), I wake at 3:30 simply because that's around the time I usually wake to nurse the boy, who is sleeping, and then I finally fall back to sleep when the door bursts open and LG says MOM THERE'S A BAT IN MY ROOM.  THE CAT IS IN MY ROOM AND THERE'S A BAT IN MY ROOM.

Same time last year we ended up with rabies shots, you recall?  (Yes, I've had bat "exclusion"  multiple times now)

So then Tiny Boy is all riled up and LG is all riled up and I'm chasing a bat around LG's room.  Eventually kids fall asleep.  I don't.  She makes too much noise and takes up 90% of a queen sized bed, which is why we stopped co-sleeping at age 2.  And I'm freaked out by the fan (PTSD, anyone?) which seems to be louder than usual and watching the shadows in case the bat--which I lost--makes its way into my room.

Tired.  Crabby.  Doctor said--amazingly--Tiny Boy's ears look perfect, just a fluky summer virus.  So he's at daycare (shh, yes, I gave him Motrin and sent him to daycare, I am a horrible person) and I'm making phone calls and there is now a dead bat in a plastic container in my kitchen.

Now I need to put on grown up clothes and go teach some people that MORE ADJECTIVES DO NOT MAKE BETTER SENTENCES.

Fucking hell.

  1. So much excitement in one night. The bat would have had me heading for the hills. A spider makes me scream. You are one brave mom.
