Note to Self at 5dp3dt

Dear Gwinne,

As you spend your evening contemplating your pregnancy symptoms--or lack thereof--I'd like to take the opportunity to remind you that not once in the three times that you have been pregnant did you suspect that you really might be. Oh, sure, you hoped you were. You paid attention to vague twinges in your ovaries, dull cramping in the uterus. But you didn't really feel pregnant. You were convinced, in fact, that those cycles hadn't worked. It was only in retrospect that you realized, oh, that's why things taste really weird, like that bagel that seemed to be coated with soap. Don't fret; there's plenty of time for things to start tasting horrible.

Stop taking your temperature. Stop pressing the sides of your breasts (of course they're going to hurt!). Go indulge the progesterone-induced hunger since, miraculously, all the IVF bloat has disappeared. Watch the last of the remaining transfer DVDs, since it needs to go back to the library tomorrow. Stop obsessing about the state of your uterus.

The fact that you're sure this didn't work? You're either right, or you're not. You'll know for sure in 8 days max.

fondly,
Your Rational Alter Ego

  1. Wouldnt it be great if our rational minds could take over and be the voices of reason?

  2. That sounds completely healthy, rational, well-reasoned... Has the emotional side of your brain told this alter ego to go fuck off yet? Because I find that, when push comes to shove, it's the emotional side that really runs this IF process. But keep reading this -- hopefully it will help.
