I think Dr. Gorgeous is irritated with me.
It might have to do with me asking if there is any other time to do my transfer than 7:30 on Friday morning. Let's keep in mind I'll be driving 1.5+ hrs, will need someone to take me, and will also need childcare for LG. Apparently at 6:00 am.
It might also have to do with me questioning if taking Medrol 4 X daily is really necessary (I'm not questioning the total dose, just whether I really need to take it roughly every 4 hours while I'm awake, and apparently the answer is yes).
Or perhaps that I came up with a progesterone plan that wasn't hers. Her reply, via the andrologist: the 70% LBR I quoted you is dependent upon following a certain protocol.
Oh-kay. Does the fact that she's already changed my progesterone plan from her usual one make that 70% inaccurate? Because, really, I fail to see how alternating days of 600 mg prometrium with 2 ccs of PIO is any different than taking 1 cc PIO and 400 mg prometrium daily, esp. given that she's said that PIO has a long half-life, which is why she alternates days on IVF cycles. And has anyone here taken more progesterone than that? I feel like I'm incredibly whiny and passive-aggressively rebellious, but I almost passed out doing my shot last night it took so long to inject that much. And I'm a PIO veteran.
Besides those stats really don't mean much when you consider all the individual variables (like, I'm using a proven donor (+), like my lining is over 10 (+), like I have a history of RPL (-)).
I plan to call back in the morning and clarify with Nurse of the Everchaning Nickname. Because if she thinks doing anything other than 2 ccs PIO daily is going to compromise the cycle, I'll do it. But I don't think I'll be able to walk.
I also plan to discuss in therapy tomorow my irrational desire to rebel and do whatever the fuck I want.
Oy.
You've invested so much energy, time, experience, and hell, even money in this process and b/c of that you have ownership of it. And you've researched it all and you've lived it. And it's intensely annoying when a doctor (even Dr. Gorgeous) seems to dismiss that kind of authority and credibility. You might actually know more than she does about this b/c you're the only patient you think about (that didn't come out right but I think you'll know what I mean). After my hemorrhage, I knew more about postpartum hemorrhage than one of my best friends who is an OB. She said she (and other drs) too often think inside the box of medical protocol and don't often enough consider the unique conditions of a particular patient. But you've been with Dr G for a while now and she does know you well and maybe she just didn't take enough time explaining her reasons for the protocol.
ReplyDeleteMy father is a doctor and I recently suggested that he must love patients like me: curious, educated, self-aware, etc. I was surprised when he said that he actually preferred the opposite b/c they don't take as much time (ask less questions and he doesn't have to explain every decision). But he also said patients like me are typically more compliant and often have better outcomes. So I say keep questioning and remember: this is your reproductive life and you are paying for this transfer.
It sounds as though I have just written your blog entry. Doing my first Dem FET and I too have the same irrational desire to rebel and question everything. Why do I need to have an EKG, chest xray, mamogram, and whatever else. I find it hypocritical that they will let me try to have my own child with my own eggs and don't give a shit if I drop dead tomorrow, but because I am having/using someone elses embryo's they want to make sure I don't have cancer, heart failure, etc. It pisses me off too. I also live 2.5 hrs away from my clinic and they schedule me an 8.15 appointment!!! Really, is that necessary. The nurses talk over me when I am trying to make my point because they have no answer for me than it is regular procedure - we need to follow procedures. I am so glad to read you are rebelling the system just like me, but at the end of the day you will toe the line, but make it clear its not cool.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly it, Rebecca. If she gave me an ACTUAL argument about doing things this way, I'd do it. But saying it's protocol--which she deviates more often than not with me, anyway--isn't reason for me to do anything.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm actually having an allergic reaction to the oil--the red welt is getting bigger rather than smaller--and might need to come off it altogether. LG has had the same result from IM injections and needed to go on massive doses of Benadryl. Ugh.
Anywya, thanks for the comment. I'll let you know how it unfolds!
The progesterone sounds heinous. I hope you can figure out a way that's less painful. You are doing so much to support this cycle, I admire your dedication. Any confirmation yet on your transfer day?
